Sound Art: Project 2

For our second project, Sound Art, I chose to dive deep into the exploration of water and the variety of moods and sounds it creates. Audience members viewing this art piece will experience various sounds associated with water, including calm ocean waves, thunderstorms, and flowing rivers, overlayed with my own experimental clips. The basis of this artwork lies in abstract background video clips screen recorded from Youtube and overlayed with additional clips to create particular moods while alluding to abstraction. Video clips were chosen in correlation to the sounds presented in the sequence; ocean wave audio was met with a video clip reflecting the sound, loud thunder was combined with visuals of thunderstorms, and so on. Due to the abstract nature of this artwork, there is no definite meaning or chronological series of events that convey a specific meaning, this sound art is meant for viewer interpretation. Visually, I decided to include mostly clips with strong blue/dark colors to reflect the stereotypical blue color humans tend to correlate with water, especially in association with the ocean. This artwork reflects the duality of water and its capability to create both tranquil, serene emotions and chaotic, anxiety-filled emotions. Water is highlighted in this piece as both a force of nature and destruction and its capacity to be controlled and untamed. Depicted in this art piece, viewers can witness water flowing calmly through a controlled stream and water in its untamed state, such as in ocean waves, hurricanes, and rain storms. The sound clips I used for this project are a combination of free online audio clips and my own experimental audio clips.
