Time

Time is the progression of events and existence from the past, present, and future. Although, there are many different ways to define time depending on how one approaches it. Time creates change. This is because all actions take place over time even minor actions create change. Humans often try to manipulate time, for example, by trying to length one's life by implementing healthy habits.
Time in art is a tool that we as artists use to remind us of the limits of our existence. There are multiple categories of time; measured time, experienced time, running time, biological time, and digital time. Measured time is when time is measured by regularly recurring events. Experienced time is the psychological disposition and attention of the participant. For example, experienced time will depend on if the person is bored, excited, etc. Running time is the length of an event such as a film. Biological time is measured with bodily functions; for example, when we feel awake or tired. Lastly, the most common, digital time is measured in milliseconds and is represented mostly in technology. For example, a clock on a phone or computer. It is up to the artist which type of time to use while creating their work. Depending on which one or more the artist uses will determine some changes and attributes to their work.

Measured Time in art example:

What did you like or didn’t like? How/Why would this element work or be important as 4D art? What are your thoughts about the piece? What did you learn from the artwork? etc.

I like this piece of art due to the meaning behind it. I believe that this artwork perfectly represents "destroying time" as it shows the clock almost looking as if it was decaying. The element of time used in this work is important as 4D art because it allows the viewer to interpret the meaning better. I believe that this piece represents the element of time because the clock is changing over time and slowly crumbling away. I learned from this artwork that time can be represented in 4D through the action of change.

 Sound

The text states that "sound is a vibration perceived by the ear". We as people use sound to speak, sing, etc. We use sound in some rituals such as a birthday party song. We even use sound to alert others of danger especially danger within distance. For example, an explosion or water rushing in before a flood.

When there is an absence of sound it is known as silence. Although it can never fully be silent. There will always be some type of sound. Silence can be used as a tool to amplify a specific sound. Humans and animals often surround themselves with sound because they perceive silence as lonely. When an artist uses perceived silence it can become a powerful tool within the piece.

There are different parts and characteristics to sound. The first is the attack of a sound which is the time between the start of the sound and when it reaches its peak. The attack on a sound can be very fast such as an object being slammed but other attacks can be slower such as a car engine in the distance. Next is asynchronous sound which is a sound that we hear but doesn't match what we see. This type of sound is tool artists use to convey internal emotions. Lastly, there are diegetic and non-diegetic sounds. Diegetic sounds are the sounds themselves while non-diegetic sounds are commentary sounds. Artists use diegetic sounds when they are representing the sound as coming from their work. Artists use non-diegetic sounds when they are representing the sound as coming from outside of their work. This helps the viewer determine time and place, atmosphere, and different types of sounds.

What did you like or didn’t like? How/Why would this element work or be important as 4D art? What are your thoughts about the piece? What did you learn from the artwork? etc.

I like that this piece shows the person's state of mind as almost seemingly calm. They use color theory by applying warm and cool colors. I don't like the shadowing on the neck I think the lines are too harsh. These vibrant colors and the person wearing the headphones can help you imagine the sounds as whimsical. Sound is important to 4D art because it unlocks another sense of art other than sight. Which helps the viewer engage in the work. I like this piece I think it comes alive with the bright contrasting colors. This piece taught me how to represent sound in art.

Movement

Light is a type of movement because it can be arranged in many different ways. Through manipulation, we can create expected and unexpected light with different contrasts. Movement is simply a change in the location of an object, light, or sound. There are two different types of movement; successful and oppositional. Successful movement steers the eye in one direction while oppositional movement contrasts with a series of forces that lead the eye in another direction.

The opposite of movement is stillness which can also be important in 4D artwork. Depending on the artwork, movement in time-based works can be observed or participatory. Whatever the artist chooses will have a different effect on how the movement will be interpreted by the viewer.  Movement is shown in a lot of different ways through film and video. To do so, the filmmaker/video-maker will use different camera angles to capture different movements such as panning or tilting a shot.

Movement in Art - What It Means Plus Master Artwork Examples

What did you like or didn’t like? How/Why would this element work or be important as 4D art? What are your thoughts about the piece? What did you learn from the artwork? etc.

I love the use of complementary colors within this famous piece. I believe that the color choice also implemented a lot of movement throughout the artwork.  I don't love that the vertical shape on the left side of the painting is black. I think if it were dark green, it would create more upward movement in contrast to the horizontal movement in the back.  The element movement is important in 4D art to capture an ongoing event in time for the viewer to connect with the artwork. I really like this piece, it is probably one of my favorite famous artworks because its so captivating to the eye with the movement. I learned that focusing on movement in your art piece can really pull the viewer in.
