Elements of 4D_Dominic Hovis

 Time

The author's definition of time is "the progression of events and existence from the past, through the present, and into the future."  The author also mentions how height, width, and depth are also associated with time.  Throughout the article, the author mentions how humans work their best to manipulate time and lengthen their lives.  The author talks about how life is about experiences and to catch as many of them as you can with the limited time each one of us have.

The author also mentions the many different categories of time.  There's measured time, experienced time, running time, biological time, and digital time.  Measured time is time measured by regularly recurring events and intervals.  Experienced time is the time that has already passed.  Running time is the length of time an event or interval is.  Biological time is the time measured to bodily functions.  Lastly, digital time, associated with technology, is the awareness of time. All of these are the time we go through and experience throughout our lives.

I like this picture because of the eerie vibe it gives off.  The big clock in the middle with the alive tree on the left and the dead tree on the right gives the viewer a sense of the inevitable events that happen over time.  It works as 4D art because it is a representation of one of its elements

Sound
The author's definition of sound is "the vibration that can be perceived by the ear."  The author also mentions how it is an integral part of communication, our social framework, and can act as a warning by alerting humans of faraway dangers.  The author states that silence, the opposite of sound, is equally important as sound, even though there is no such thing as true silence.  Perceived silence can be used to amplify sound or can be a tool for expression.
Like time, there are many different categories of time.  There's synchronous sound, nonsynchronous sound, asynchronous sound, diegetic sounds, and non-diegetic sounds.  Synchronous sounds are sounds that play on-screen while Nonsynchronous sounds are sounds that play but they are not visible.  Asynchronous sound are sounds we hear that doesn't match what is seen.  Lastly, diegetic sounds are "actual" sounds while non-diegetic sounds are "commentary."  All these sounds play a major part in our communication.
I like this picture because it shows sound waves in a clear and interesting way.  I think the many waves show a sense of loudness coming from the tape.  This element is important to 4D art because sound is a form of artwork and can be used to set the vibe of one's art.

Movement
The author's definition of sound is "A shift or variation in the location of an object." The author also states that it is a very effective way to direst focus of a composition. Two of the forms of movement are successional movement and oppositional movement.  Successional movement is when the movement leads the eye of the viewer in one direction.  On the contrary, oppositional movement is when the movement leads the viewers eye in a completely different direction.
Movement has many distinct parts.  There's attacking movement, sustained movement, and decaying movement.  Attack movement is when an object starts to build movement, especially from an area below.  Sustained movement is when an object starts to build speed and stretch out.  Finally, decaying movement is when an object starts to slow down or completely stops moving.  The author states "These parts of a movement are central to planning movements..."
I like this artwork because even though the artwork is stationary, the horse looks like it is moving.  This art piece is important as 4D art because the movement shown is its most essential element.
